Note
|
WWI saw George, aged 17, as a Private (service number GS/165) in the 9th (Service) Battalion Royal Fusiliers (Buffs), formed August 1914 in Hounslow, Middlesex. 9Bn was part of K1, attached to 36th Brigade, 12th (Eastern) Division. The battalion was posted to France 01 June 1915. On 04 October 1915, during the Battle of Loos (Gun Trench - Hulluch Quarries Sector; near Cite St Elie), he was severely wounded by shrapnel (partial laceration of the spine). On 11 October 1915 he was 'invalided home' to the West Suffolk General Hospital and subsequently to Southall Auxiliary Hospital, 14 Dec 1915. George was discharged as 'being no longer physically fit for War Service' 03 April 1916 (he was paralysed from the waist and incontinent) to the Royal Star & Garter Home in Richmond, Surrey. (Quite possibly one of their first 'patients' as the Star & Garter only opened in 1916). George died just 3 weeks later on 24 April 1916 aged 19. He's buried in Stanwell Cemetery, Stanwell, Middlesex. |
