Note

It seems that James had a successful military career. His military record (on Ancestry) is somewhat limited but he had 3 periods of service; 25 Oct 1887 - 24 Oct 1899 Royal Horse Artillery (assume that's 7+5), then 5 Jul 1900 - 4 Jul 1909 Royal Horse Artillery and posted to Royal Field Artillery and again 10 Sep 1914 - 19 Sep 1918 when he was discharged physically unfit - Para 392 (XVI) KR. At the time of his discharge, he was a Battery Quartermaster Sergeant

Note

James was mentioned in the London Gazette for Valuable Service Rendered in connection with the war. Unfortunately, I can't decypher the date or edition so not been able to find record online.
